The print is four by five feet, printed on gampi in nine panels from direct gravure plates on copper. The panels are joined and seamed, backed with sekishu kozo twice and then dried on boards in the method of Japanese traditional scroll mounting.<br />
<br />
The prints were released in an edition of 25 and nearly all sold out as of now. We co-published the print with <a href="http://cclarkgallery.com/artists/works/sandow-birk#slide2">Catharine Clark Gallery</a> in SF. <br />
<br />
Pictured here are assistants Robin Milliken and Courtney Sennish working on the prints.<br />

The image is inspired by a painting by Rosetsu Nagasawa (1754-1799) of a skeleton in zazen. <br /><br />It was explained to me once that monks meditated in caves eating only pine needles until they died and their bodies were later found in a perfect state of desiccation. <br /><br />This took place in the mountains of Tohuku Japan. The piece, which will be destroyed and covered up in a few days, is a prayer in honor of the Japanese living in that region.Paul Mullowneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00015118040351579396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7896280536364004495.post-90174134857384286412011-04-11T07:40:00.001-10:002011-04-11T07:41:43.284-10:00Studio Door<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hzZYLC_Cihw/TaM9TU_dnaI/AAAAAAAAApo/poF2-9lYhog/s1600/4_11_2.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; Tattoo artists hold a unique position in our culture as one of the only groups of contemporary artists who work under the public eye in studios that get a lot of traffic. The tattoo studio can be seen as an ongoing living performance piece where tradition, art, therapy, psychology, fashion, medicine and commerce mingle.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family: arial;font-family:arial;">Inspired by that idea, this exhibition consisted of my 10’x15’ studio being moved to <a href="http://www.paiatattooparlor.com/">Paia Tattoo Parlor</a> for the duration of the exhibition, while I will worked new projects involving woodcut printing, photography, and other media. Working tables, portable walls, print drying boards, computer, art, books, desk, chairs, and all the ephemera associated with the working studio was set up, creating a four-week installation/performance/exhibition of new and ongoing works in progress.</span> <span style="font-family: arial;font-family:arial;"><br /><br />All work was created during the four weeks of the exhibition, therefore the traditional exhibition opening will was made superfluous—and we had an exhibition closing, Saturday, August 21, when the public was invited to come and see what went on for four weeks. </span><span style="font-family:arial;">There were Sunday night Salon Nights and Tuesday night life drawing gatherings, and generally there was a lot of dialogue back and forth between artists of all types, with myself and the artists in the studio: Billy, Circle, Justin Nate and Tania, all riffing off of things contemporary, trad, American and Japanese. I cranked out a big <span style="font-style: italic;">Hanya</span> to go with that tattoo on my arm and an <span style="font-style: italic;">oni</span> that I also tattooed on Justin--an image I have been using for years.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">I'm honored and thrilled to have been able to work with the gang at Paia Tattoo Parlor and I am hoping this leads to many more collaborative efforts in the future.</span> <span style="font-family: arial;font-family:arial;"><br /><br />--Paul Mullowney<br />Sept 2010<br />Portland, OR<br /></span>Paul Mullowneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00015118040351579396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7896280536364004495.post-38166198277344257092010-08-29T20:19:00.002-10:002010-08-29T20:22:38.321-10:00Slide Show of the Whole Four WeeksTattooing Justin, the view on the street, the work, the whole nine yards and four weeks (most of it) in seven minutes. <br /><br />Thanks a million to the gang at <a href="http://www.paiatattooparlor.com">Paia Tattoo Parlor</a><br /><br /><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/14533966" width="400" height="300" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/14533966">Work In(g) Studio Exhibition Slideshow</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user4238530">Paul Mullowney</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>Paul Mullowneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00015118040351579396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7896280536364004495.post-86371121478605579282010-08-29T20:16:00.003-10:002010-08-29T21:56:35.739-10:00Ian, Nate, Orlando, Hanging Out at Closing Time<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtNJX-5kpI/AAAAAAAAAgs/ilxMIlzP_VQ/s1600/4921583650_aab28c5f47_z.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 350px; height: 234px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtNJX-5kpI/AAAAAAAAAgs/ilxMIlzP_VQ/s320/4921583650_aab28c5f47_z.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511083392469930642" border="0" /></a>Paul Mullowneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00015118040351579396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7896280536364004495.post-20921123168046154492010-08-29T19:59:00.004-10:002010-08-29T20:16:34.242-10:00The End<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtMlfjNqzI/AAAAAAAAAgk/BEyhg5_iqfM/s1600/endgame2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtMlfjNqzI/AAAAAAAAAgk/BEyhg5_iqfM/s320/endgame2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511082776026000178" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtMfoNPpqI/AAAAAAAAAgc/7J_IhsfEziw/s1600/endgame1.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtMfoNPpqI/AAAAAAAAAgc/7J_IhsfEziw/s320/endgame1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511082675270559394" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtMaduJ27I/AAAAAAAAAgU/1LMkDB-8H3U/s1600/endgame3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/THtMaduJ27I/AAAAAAAAAgU/1LMkDB-8H3U/s320/endgame3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511082586556455858" border="0" /></a><br />Leading up to the last day was pure chaos with several sets up prints making it to the street. Printing up a whole bunch of a new image that is scheduled to hit the streets of some Maui town soon, assisted by Katie, Amanda and Kate. The studio is--true to my form--a wreck now, with two big new woodcuts coming together. In the middle of it all I tattooed that little demon guy on Paia Tattoo Parlor co-owner Justin who offered up a space on his foot and mentored me through the whole process with his vast experience of inking skin--an amazing teacher. The same meaning as the verb to carve as in carving woodblocks. Thus <i>Hori </i>comes before both the names of professional tattooers and traditional woodblock carvers...like <i>Horiyoshi III</i> of Yokohama, one of the great living tattoers of Japan. Western artists take on the Japanese names, too, or are given them by masters. Chris Trevino is known as <i>Horimana</i>. Ed Hardy used the name <i>O-nami</i>, or 'Great Wave', the name of a Sumo wrestler in a famous Zen parable.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdX4BFIK-I/AAAAAAAAAdM/rkxaMdkPAQM/s1600/carving3.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdX4BFIK-I/AAAAAAAAAdM/rkxaMdkPAQM/s320/carving3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505465689357954018" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXzNzIHCI/AAAAAAAAAdE/Xv37UHDBLfE/s1600/carving2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXzNzIHCI/AAAAAAAAAdE/Xv37UHDBLfE/s320/carving2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505465606872767522" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXtn7XRWI/AAAAAAAAAc8/142J8mGKJzg/s1600/carving1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXtn7XRWI/AAAAAAAAAc8/142J8mGKJzg/s320/carving1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505465510807422306" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXoLNU2XI/AAAAAAAAAc0/7CfVjejSV9A/s1600/8.14.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXoLNU2XI/AAAAAAAAAc0/7CfVjejSV9A/s320/8.14.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505465417198786930" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXYN4J54I/AAAAAAAAAcs/fl1O0q72Vvg/s1600/8.14.2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGdXYN4J54I/AAAAAAAAAcs/fl1O0q72Vvg/s320/8.14.2.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5505465143037388674" /></a>Paul Mullowneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00015118040351579396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7896280536364004495.post-16404034175475966752010-08-09T10:37:00.005-10:002010-08-09T10:44:49.275-10:00Sunday Nights Continue<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoscg2ctI/AAAAAAAAAck/-UXEwOxcV68/s1600/tom4.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoscg2ctI/AAAAAAAAAck/-UXEwOxcV68/s320/tom4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503513857424257746" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoVDHGpXI/AAAAAAAAAcc/WS7SpKA0oAI/s1600/tom3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoVDHGpXI/AAAAAAAAAcc/WS7SpKA0oAI/s320/tom3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503513455468389746" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoN5l7sOI/AAAAAAAAAcU/qnuHQY69b0Y/s1600/tom2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoN5l7sOI/AAAAAAAAAcU/qnuHQY69b0Y/s320/tom2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503513332654256354" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoBzmOGCI/AAAAAAAAAcM/FsSrpar62Jc/s1600/claudia.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_16I2G_8qB7U/TGBoBzmOGCI/AAAAAAAAAcM/FsSrpar62Jc/s320/claudia.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503513124886419490" border="0" /></a><br />Last night was a big turnout for a slide presentation of Chinese teahouses by Andrew Binkley and Wenying Shi.<br /><br />Tom Faught, who once tried to get a tattoo when he was 17 but got sidetracked when he had to run out of the shop and chase his car which was being towed, has waited ever since for the right time to get that work done. They went on to art school in Portland and are back on Maui taking a break until they continue their studies at Evergreen State. Very great artists, they have been known to hit the streets of Paia with their creations and have also done some amazing installations in the forests on the slopes of Haleakala--begging the eternal question: <span style="font-style: italic;">'if there is a temporary string installation in the forest and nobody sees it, is it art??'</span>Paul Mullowneyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00015118040351579396noreply@blogger.com
